He earned his MA in English at University of Missouri-Columbia, and his PhD in English (Creative Writing) at Texas Tech University. Stueart has taught workshops for 20 years both in universities (Friends University, Newman, Texas Tech, and Wayland Baptist) and outside of them. He is a Lambda Literary Fellow for Emerging LGBT Voices, a Milton Fellow (through Image magazine) for writers of the Christian imagination, a graduate of the Clarion Workshop, and a Fulbright Fellow to Canada
